Wet Weather a Bonus for Tree Planting Projects

It’s been a bumper year for native tree planting across Bathurst.

This year, Bathurst Regional Council has taken advantage of the wet weather
to plant in excess of 7000 native trees, shrubs and grasses throughout our
parks, and alongside creeks and the Macquarie River.

Mayor of Bathurst Cr Gary Rush said the plantings will assist in providing
habitat for native wildlife, and increasing the biodiversity values of the
Bathurst region.

“Key projects in 2016 have included the revegetation of the banks of the
Macquarie River in Jubilee Park on Ophir Road, and the project in Rankens
Bridge Park to restore Regent Honeyeater habitat.

“Volunteers have also worked hard during community planting days to
revegetate Jordan Creek in Blayney Road Common with native habitat.

“Over the summer months, the focus will turn to watering and weeding these
plantings to ensure their survival through the summer months.

“On behalf of Council I would like to extend our thanks to the many
volunteers who have dedicated their time to assist with this year’s tree
planting and maintenance program,” Cr Rush said

Environmental Excellence - Local Government Winners

Four of the Central West Councils Environment and Waterways Alliance Member Councils have been recognised for their environmental achievements at this year’s prestigious Local Government NSW Environment awards held in Sydney on 29 November.

The award ceremony was held at NSWs first six-star, green-rated venue Doltone House, on Sydneys Darling Island Wharf.

Lachlan Shire Council triumphed being named the overall category winner in Waste Education and Communication for their Waste Services Rationalisation. The Environment and Waterways Alliance also partnered with Lachlan Shire Council on their Roadside Corridor Assessment and Management guidelines for which they were highly commended.

The Natural Environment Protection & Enhancement: On-Ground Works was a highly contested category with three Member Councils nominated amongst the six finalists.

Alliance partnered projects fared well with Parkes Shire Council and Orange City Council being successful in winning their nominated divisions with Bathurst Regional Council being Highly Commended for their Restoring Regent Honeyeater habitat project.

The entries were of an extremely high standard and highlight the success of the tireless environmental efforts being made by these Member Councils and the importance of the collaborative approach with Alliance projects in the region.

The Central West Councils Environment & Waterways Alliance is a partnership of 19 Councils across Central West NSW, encompassing both the Central Tablelands and Central West Local Land Services  regions.

The Alliance exists to improve environmental outcomes across the region and works closely with Central Tablelands and Central West Local Land Services.
